Check the money before you take the trade
Knowing the cash value of a setup before entry removes most of the emotion from it. Enter the direction, the entry, your intended target or stop, and the lot size, and you can see whether the trade is actually worth the risk you are taking.
Reading the result
- Pips — the raw distance between entry and exit, divided by the pip size of the instrument.
- Amount — pips multiplied by the pip value of your lot size, in a USD account.
Run the calculation twice: once with your stop and once with your target. If the target result is not at least twice the stop result, the setup usually is not worth taking.
What the number leaves out
Spread, commission and overnight swap all reduce a real result, and slippage on news can make a stop fill worse than planned. Treat the output as a clean-conditions estimate, and always confirm on your own platform. Trading carries a high risk of loss.
